    We have introduced a series of methodologies aimed to identify and characterize the antimalarial activity of extracts or purified compounds isolated from marine source. We have re-established the culture of Plasmodium falciparum in IPK labs. We were also able to determine MIC and IC50 for different extracts using data derived from direct parasitemia counts according to Schlichtherle et al (2000) or indirect methods such as the pLDH assay described by Makler et al (1993). We were capable of comparing selectivity indices of extracts under evaluation by the use of cytotoxicity assays against human cell lines. We introduced the Plasmodium berghei rodent model for in vitro (Janse and Waters, 1995) and in vivo applications (Test de Peters et al, 1975). Relevant contributions to the staff development has been the training in separation by normal phase adsorption and filtration chromatography of natural products followed by NMR-H analysis (UFSCar, Brasil), the training in P. falciparum culture technique and high throughput screening of inhibition of heme polymerization (Institute for Research in Pharmacy and Biochemistry, UMSA, La Paz, Bolivia), in addition to attending to courses of Bioinformatics (USP, Brasil) and of Pharmacognosia, Organic Chemistry, Chemistry of Natural Products and Spectroscopy methods (IFAL, Cuba).

    Dr. Echefu Bright is the Chief Development Officer of Bricke Institute for Health. Born on the 11th of November 1985 to the family of Mr & Mrs. N.S Echefu of Imo State. He is known for his contribution to the field of Biomedical Engineering and Public Health Research. A recipient of many awards including the 3rd African Young Scientist Award in South Africa and later in Ireland. Echefu Bright is currently, a medical doctor practicing with the Bricke International Hospitals and a number of research institutes including Bricke Institute for Health, Nigeria, Echefu Bright Institute for Genetic Engineering Research (EBIGER) and the Nigerian Biotechnology Society. He is a fellow of the World Academy of Science, Nigeria Academy of Science, Nigeria Mathematical Society, Nigeria Biotechnology Society, World Young Inventors Forum, the Nigerian Medical Association, the Unicef Voices of the Youths, the Global Youth Coalition on AIDS, African Children Voices and the World Parliament Experiment.
