    We have introduced a series of methodologies aimed to identify and characterize the antimalarial activity of extracts or purified compounds isolated from marine source. We have re-established the culture of Plasmodium falciparum in IPK labs. We were also able to determine MIC and IC50 for different extracts using data derived from direct parasitemia counts according to Schlichtherle et al (2000) or indirect methods such as the pLDH assay described by Makler et al (1993). We were capable of comparing selectivity indices of extracts under evaluation by the use of cytotoxicity assays against human cell lines. We introduced the Plasmodium berghei rodent model for in vitro (Janse and Waters, 1995) and in vivo applications (Test de Peters et al, 1975). Relevant contributions to the staff development has been the training in separation by normal phase adsorption and filtration chromatography of natural products followed by NMR-H analysis (UFSCar, Brasil), the training in P. falciparum culture technique and high throughput screening of inhibition of heme polymerization (Institute for Research in Pharmacy and Biochemistry, UMSA, La Paz, Bolivia), in addition to attending to courses of Bioinformatics (USP, Brasil) and of Pharmacognosia, Organic Chemistry, Chemistry of Natural Products and Spectroscopy methods (IFAL, Cuba).

    Currently, I am finalizing my PhD in public health which I aim to defend by mid-2006. My thesis is based on a clinical cohort of HIV infected patients in south Ethiopia. In this study we described predictors of disease progression in untreated patients, assessed outcome of antiretroviral therapy including comparison of mortality rates and tuberculosis incidence rates, evaluated simplified lab and clinical tools to follow patients and looked at the acceptability HIV counseling among tuberculosis patients. Besides, I have participated in clinical trials in Africa and took courses in the principles of GCP.
